Rhetorically Speaking

This week we began to look at Aristotle's Rhetoric, with an eye towards understanding what RHETORIC is, and how it is used. Since RHETORIC will be the cornerstone of our course this semester, it is important that we have a clear understanding of what it is, and what it means for us in AP Language and Composition.

Although we won't dwell on Aristotle for very long, I would encourage you to look him up, and to bookmark Rhetoric in your browser for the next few weeks while we construct our understanding of key concepts. In particular, we will look at Aristotle's Rhetorical Triangle, and how this might serve us in writing better, more-directed texts. We will look at it in class, but if you are curious you should find a number of interesting and informative sites on the internet.

I would recommend that you keep a dictionary close at hand, and that you take the time to make note of the words that you do not know. In fact, I would strongly encourage you all to collect words this semester in your own "personal dictionary", so that you will you have a record of how your vocabulary has grown over the coming months.
